Welcome to the Lakeland Central School District’s podcast site. On the right, you will find links to the podcasts produced by our schools.* Click on a school name to access the files created by students and teachers in the district. The district has been recognized for our podcasting efforts. In 2008, the Lower Hudson Regional Information Center awarded us with the “Pioneer Award for Innovation in Educational Technology” for our podcasting projects.
A podcast is a series of audio or video digital media files that are distributed over the Internet through syndicated feeds that users can subscribe to. The feeds and files can then be transferred to portable media players (iPods or other MP3 players) and to personal computers. What distinguishes a podcast from an “ordinary” audio or video file published on the Internet is its ability to be syndicated, or subscribed to, and downloaded automatically when new content is added. This feature allows subscribers to stay abreast of new content and not have to revisit the webpage over and over to see if new content has been added.
Our elementary students have been very engaged and energized by podcasting projects. Students are creating podcasts in a number of different disciplines and on many different curricular topics. This media gives them the opportunity to express themselves in new and innovative ways, helps them with their oral speaking skills, their writing skills and their listening skills as well. At the same time they are engaged in 21st century learning experiences that have the capability of reaching audiences outside of their classroom. Students are motivated to produce high quality work knowing that their podcast can be viewed and heard by a global audience.
